| With their strong expressions of traditional or local characteristics, historic conservation areas are essential parts of a historic city. As a historic and culture legacy, these places should be considered"a priceless economic resource". However, the present conditions of historic areas are in conflict with the needs of modern city life. Confronted with large-scale reconstruction of the old city in the metabolic process of a metropolis, preservation of these areas is a very difficult mission, and some of the areas are protectively ruined. It's a practical question how to balance protection and development, thus, to seek for a better way to preserve and renew the historic conservation areas.Historic and cultural preservation in many foreign countries began with individual architectures, then, extended to areas, and eventually, to the whole city. To preserve historic legacies in the process of development is a shared understanding and practical goal all over the world. In China, the protection began with historic sites; then, the concept of"Protection of Historic and Cultural City"was proposed; afterwards, the concept of"Protection of Historic Area"followed, as further understanding of cultural legacy preservation was aroused; thus, a multi-layer historic and cultural site protection system formed. Rapid urbanization exposes the protection planning of historic areas in view of city cultural legacy a hot spot. With more and more attention on historic area conservation, there will be more and more studies on city planning dealing with historic area preservation.The author of this essay uses the Xin He Pu Area as her research case, analyzes the conflicts between the residential as well as functional conditions of the facilities and the needs of modern life. For reference, she also studies and summarizes the modes of successful cases in foreign historic area conservations and renewal. Thus, with comprehensive consideration on the location, surroundings, history, economic conditions, and other substantial conditions, the author reviews on the protective and renewal practice on Xin He Pu Area in an attempt to find a more suitable and effective way for better protection and community vitality. |
