Study On The Conservation Of The Historic Urban Area In Beihai’s Protection And Renewal To Its Old Town

The concept, Historic Urban Area, enlarges the area of conservation to historic city which before only emphasizes the protection of historical and cultural heritage, such as culture relic protection sites and historical and cultural blocks. In stead, it emphasizes that the citie’s traditional spatial pattern and historical feature should be protected integrally. This concept is put forward for the conservation of the cities developed during modern times, in which there is no clear border of urban area. Bsesides, this paper connects the conservation of Beihai’s historic urban area with its old city renewal, for the purpose to not only protect the historical and cultural resources but also create the culture characteristics of beihai old city’s development by mining and displaying the historical and cultural resources. And, it benefits the old city’s renewal to rebuild the connection between the historic urban area and the old city.This paper consists of five chapters. The first chapter is introduction, which introduces the background of Study on the Conservation of the Historic Urban Area in Beihai’s Protection and Renewal to Its Old Town, and the significance to guide the development of Beihai old town and the conservation of the modern type of historic famous historical and cultural city in China. The second chapter is literature review, including defining the time of the modern type of historic famous city, the interpretation of the concepts historic urban area and old city renewal, and the combing of existing research results of the relations between these two concepts. The third chapter is the present status and existing problems of Beihai old city, including the analysis and summary of land use function, society and population, road system, and the city space, and so on; besides, the paper also summarizes the main problems in the old city renewal, and puts forward the urgency to adjust the border of the historic urban area and determine its protection methods and measures. The forth chapter is the study on the adjustment of the border of Beihai’s historic urban area, based on three principles, that is the development and evolution, historical and cultural characteristics and value, and the legacy of history and culture. The fifth chapter is the study on the methods and measures of Beihai old city’s renewal and the conservation of its historic urban area. Firstly, the paper summaries the main problems in renewal and conservation; and then, it combs the experience of the old towns’ overall protection of China’s traditional ancient developed cities, and the conservation of the historic urban area of China’s modern type of historic famous historical and cultural city; finally, the paper divides Beihai’s historic urban area to three protection level, that is key protection zone, general protection zone and harmonic area, and puts forward different conservation and renewal methods and measures, such as the protection of historic resources and the city’s traditional patterns and historic features, control of the building height and development intensity, transform of land use and the renewal of old town’s space. The sixth chapter is summary, summarizing the experience of Beihai’s old town’s renewal and its historic urban area’s conservation; besides, it also points out some further study the writer should make in the later study and work.
