A Probe Into The Construction And Planning Of Ecological Campus

With increasing out-crying of environmental protection issues, ecological civilization has become a hot topic that attracts significant attention. The harmony between Man and Nature and the establishment of ecological sustainable pathway are the only choice for the survival and development of modern human society.With the campus as an important component of urban area, its ecological influence on the latter has been attaching greater importance. The higher education institutions (HEIs) in 21st century should swim with the tide of ecological civilization, actively construct ecological campus, disseminate the concept of ecological civilization, assemble the technologies of ecological civilization, and cultivate talents in this field.This essay aimed at the construction of ecological campus in HEIs. Firstly, the development trend of Chinese higher education and the current situation of Chinese campus construction were analyzed. Thirty years after the Reformation and Open Policy, Chinese higher education developed rapidly. Many HEIs have boosted their schooling hierarchy and size. Following the wave of HEI merging and expansion, university cities were built in everywhere. However, many unharmonious phenomena surfaced in the rapid expansion of the universities, such as the insufficient protection of natural ecological value in campus, destruction of the ecological elements of education, negligence of the construction of economical-ecological system, and impropriety functional definition of the social ecological system.Following the analysis of the practice and development of"green campus"in HEIs at home and abroad, this essay suggested that ecological campus construction should be currently the mainstream of Chinese HEI campus construction, and it is also an important component of Chinese ecological civilization structure.Starting from the contents of ecological campus construction, this essay analyzed its features, and explored the building of ecological campus standardization system from varied aspects. It illustrated that the establishment of ecological campus will facilitate the improvement of campus environmental quality and the harmonious development of campus construction, and will aid the penetration of influence of university campus onto the society, and will promote the spread of sustainability concept, and will advance the sustainable development of the regional economy. This essay investigated the case of the successful construction of ecological campus at Fujian University of Agriculture and Forestry, comparing with the construction and planning of several other ecological campuses of HEIs in Japan, Korean, and Malaysia. It explored how the construction and planning of ecological campus should adapt the demands of ecological civilization in 21st century.This essay finally laid down the guidelines for ecological campus construction, i.e. the management and design of ecological campus should implement the general ecological planning in areas such campus zoning, land usage, greens, building, environment, and culture, based on the principles of global optimizing, coordinating, function and high-efficiency, ecological balancing, diversity, and overall benefit.
