Problems of urban traffic such as traffic congestion, environmental pollution, energy crisis are increasing seriously. Developing urban rail transit, which is with large volume, low energy consumption and little pollution, is the best way to solve urban transportation issues. Comparing with subway and light rail, modern tram is low cost, moderate capacity, and feasibility for the urban radius curve and big gradient. Modern tram represents the development direction of urban transportation.The modern tram operation control system (TOCS), which is responsible for operation control and safety protection, connects vehicle subsystem, line subsystem and traction power supply subsystem. At present, the research on the TOCS is still in the initial stage. Therefore, it is very important to get further study on the TOCS. In this thesis, the business process of the modern tram system and the functional requirement the TOCS were analyzed. And then, the design scheme of the ground operation control system (GOCS) was presented according to the CBTC. On the basis, the elementary prototype for the GOCS was developed, and the joint debugging of the TOCS was completed. Specific contents are as follows:Firstly, the business process and the functional requirement of the TOCS were analyzed, based on it, the TOCS was designed. Secondly, the functional requirement of the GOCS of the modern tram was analyzed. The design of the GOCS, including the general structure, the internal and external interface design, were completed.Thirdly, the software of the GOCS, used for tram information management, movement authority calculation, regional handover, trackside equipment control and state acquisition, was programmed based on the PC104with VxWorks OS. The man-machine interactive software, based on the PC with Windows OS, was programmed, which provide users with the supervision of tram running state and artificial control of trackside equipment interface.Fourthly, the hardware of wireless communication simulation unit, based on the built-in Zigbee wireless protocol stack micro controller JN5139, was developed. The control software for RS232serial ports and wireless communication interface conversion was programmed. Functions of the unit were tested.Finally, the GOCS was established. The functions and the interfaces of the subsystem were debugged. Joint central operation control subsystem, the vehicle operation control subsystem, and based on environment simulation system, the integrated debugging of the TOCS was completed. The results show that the GOCS meets the general requirements of the modern tram.
