Objective:To investigate the clinical significance and impact of different subsets of the expression of T lymphocytes (CD4+, CD8+ T cells) on the BPH nodules. To explore the expression of the subsets of T cells within the parameters of BPH nodules. Methods:Using Immunohistochemical techniques, we detected the expression of T lymphocyte subsets (CD4+,CD8+ T cells) in benign prostatic hyperplasia nodules. The data were derived by using Computer image analysis system(Image-ProPlus 6.0) to measure the mean optical density(MOD) of the positive region. The data with the mean optical densityof the positive region (CD4+,CD8+ T cells) in the different size and area of BPH nodules were Statistically analyzed with the SPSS 17.0 software.Results:(1) The expression of CD4+, CD8+ in BPH nodules was significantly higher than that in normal prostate tissue, but the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ decreased significantly. (2) The expression of CD4+ in the edge region of benign prostatic hyperplasia nodules was higher than The expression of the central region, while the expression of CD8+ in the edge region was lower than that of the central region. The ratio of CD4+/CD8+ of central area was significantly lower than that of the edge in BPH nodules. (3) The expression of CD4+, CD8+ in the group which diameter of Benign prostatic hyperplasia nodules were larger than 5 mm was higher than the group of benign prostatic hyperplasia nodules' diameter≤5mm, while the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ decreased significantly. (4) CD4+, CD8+ expression positively correlated with PSA, prostate volume and the percentage of interstitial area, but the expression of CD4+, CD8+ had no correlation with IPSS, Qmax, age, duration. However, the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ have negative correlation with PSA, prostate volume, age and history of disease. Conclusions:This research concluded that the inflammatory infiltrate of T lymphocyte subsets (CD4+,CD8+ T cells) played an important role in the formation and development of BPH nodules. Therefore, immune factors may played crucial role in the process of the formation and development of BPH.
