In our country's English teaching situation, reading is an effective way of learning and developing language skills. The level of reading skills is a comprehensive reflection of all. However, the author in the years of teaching practice, find China's Higher Normal School students'English reading situation is not optimistic, which is a big obstacle to hamper the students' English literacy. The situation stimulates the implementation of the Task-based Teaching Method in the reading teaching, on which this paper is focused. Based on the relative theories, the paper introduces the background of the approach and their application. Considering the students'cognitive ability and language level, and the relative types of language teaching mode of operation, the reading class can be divided into three stages: pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading. In order to help students with different reading proficiency master reading techniques, the teacher should use different classroom organizations. In different stages, the teacher should give students different reading training. The author makes an experiment to apply the Task-based Teaching Method in reading teaching. The subjects of the experiment are third-year Higher Normal School students of two natural classes with one titled as the experimental class and the other as the controlled class. Before the experiment, their reading level has no significant difference. In the experiment, the controlled class is instructed in a traditional way, using Five-step Teaching Method, and the Task-based Teaching Method exploited in the experimental class. After the 18-week experiment, the students from both classes take the PET-3 test. The analysis of their reading scores shows that the teaching effect of the Task-based Teaching Method is better than that of the traditional way.
