In the first decade of this century, the pace of climate change, with its impacts on ecosystems, has been far faster than most people expected. How does life on our planet respond to and adapt to climate change? This question has never been more urgent than it is today.Climate and Ecosystems,a book published in 2013 and written by the ecological and atmospheric expert David Schimel, provides an authoritative introduction to the complex relationship between living things and climate. The book discusses the effects of climate on the physiology and behavior of organisms and on the distribution of species of plants and animals over the planet, and also the mechanisms through which ecosystems change in response to climate change. The thesis chooses Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 of the book as the material of the translation practice: Chapter 2 introduces the basics of climate and energy balance from an organism's-eye view and Chapter 3 addresses the effects of climate on ecosystems, including the geographic patterns and the physiological and behavioral responses of organisms. As a practical translation strategy, explicitation is the technique of making explicit in the target text the implicit information that could be inferred from the context in the source text.German scholar Klaudy classifies explicitation into obligatory explicitation, optional explicitation, pragmatic explicitation and translation-inherent explicitation. This thesis explores explicitation strategies in E-C translation of scientific and technological texts with obligatory explicitation, optional explicitation and pragmatic explicitation as its theoretical guidance.Through the translation practice, this thesis summarizes seven explicitation strategies: specification, amplification, repetition, splitting, adjustment of word order, annotation within text and annotation outside text. The thesis is composed of five chapters: Chapter 1 briefly introduces the original text and the significance of the present translation practice;Chapter 2 introduces the process of translation practice;Chapter 3 gives an overview of explicitation in translation studies and introduces Klaudy's classifications of explicitation and the reasons for adopting Klaudy's classifications of explicitation as theoretical guidance;Chapter 4 gives a detailed analysis of the explicitation strategies in the translation of Climate and Ecosystems, namely, specification, amplification, repetition, splitting, adjustment of word order, annotation within text and annotation outside text;Chapter 5 summarizes the findings and limitations of this translation practice.
