Chinese idioms are unique expressions that reflect the linguistic habits, ideas, lifestyle, and traditional culture of Chinese. Learning idioms is meaningful because it allows us to understand Chinese national characteristics, living environment and custom besides learning the language itself. Therefore, learning idioms is inevitable to effectively communication with native speaker. However, teaching Chinese idioms to foreigners has attracted very little attention and thus lacks systematic organization. This paper suggests the guiding principles of teaching Chinese idioms to foreigners, including selecting and assigning levels.The paper includes five parts:The first part is a brief comment on the reasons for the topic, and a summarization of preview studies.The second part gives the definition of idioms based on preview studies and comparisons with other common expressions.The third part introduces the necessity of assigning levels to idioms and its principles.The fourth part groups idioms into three difficulty levels based on the three principles introduced in the paper.The last part introduces teaching plans for each difficulty levels, including step-by-step instructions.
