In Ming dynasty, the side walls of the Yongping fu, the capital's inside left land, traverse across the northern territory since the Shanhai pass. Beyond the borders, the northern nomadic nation military forces always exist throughout the Ming dynasty. In such a geographical location and military situation, within the borders of the Yongping fu, its military strategy stature constantly improves and its military defense building construction develops increasingly. With a corresponding, after the early Ming dynasty's military building development, this area establish the Ji town till Jiajing period. The military settlements are the material basis of military defense, taken by Ji town's military strategy as the primary thing. During the Hongwu period, the Yongping fu, located in the eastern region of the Ji town, already built the sidewall, camps and castles within the borders. This paper takes these military settlements as the main research object. And its content is consisted of four chapters.The first chapter first introduces the military and political background of the Yongping fu and its surrounding areas in early Ming; secondly discusses the establishing process of the seven wei within the boarder and the formation process of the seven yinglu; finally divides the military settlements within the territory into four layers of hierarchical structure. The second chapter analyzes the location characteristic of the Town-city and Lu-city and as well as TiDiao-city one by one, putting forward the space distribution characteristic which is the three-chain defense line. The third chapter analyzes mass statistical data relevant to the military settlements; summarizes the city-circle scale and the characteristics of every level's settlements; and then researches the settlements'internal space structure according to written records as well as maps. The fourth chapter discusses the change of the military defense and the revocation of weisuo within the territory of Yongping fu during the late Ming till early Qing dynasty. Finally the paper focuses on the analysis of the urbanization process of Shanhai pass.
