Village is the center of human activity and the sign of man-land relationship in rural area. With the development of rural economic society, the rural environment, rural households'production, style of life and employment are changing largely. The transition affects spatial distribution patterns. In the current social and economic development environment, it plays important actual and theory significance that researching relevant village merger, analyzing the features of village merger in plain village, and exploring the necessity and the scale of village merger. In the paper, taking Tengzhou city of Shandong Province as the research object and on the direction of related theories such as geography, economics, sociology, based on property data of spatial distribution of rural residential and survey data of living conditions of rural households, combined qualitative and quantitative analysis methods, we explore the necessity and problem of village merger. The paper includes six parts:The first part is a brief introduction that discusses the background and significance of the subject, researches the importance and analysis the situation of village merger. At the same time, the paper introduces the research train of thought, framework, methods and innovative possibly. The second part makes a summary of the meaning and classification of village merger, introduces the compensation mechanism of land appreciation, scale economy and the coordination between people and land, and analysis the population size of village. The third part analysis the problems that the waste of land, agricultural modernization and the level of rural infrastructure. The fourth part researches the necessity of village merger. The fifth part makes a case study of village merger. The sixth part pointes out the further research in the future work. By the above analysis, this article gets the following conclusions:(1) Our village construction has some problems such as a waste of land, the lower level of agricultural modernization and lack of rural infrastructure. By village merger, it could increase china's cultivated land area, improve the lever of agricultural mechanization, increase non-agricultural employment, save the nation's financial expenditures, and improve the efficiency of the rural infrastructure construction. In addition, village merger can increase the resources per capita, life level and accelerate agricultural modernization. Generally speaking, village merger is a higher feasibility and new method in the new socialist countryside development.(2) The size problem of village merger is related to the construction of infrastructure facilities, the efficiency of agricultural mechanization, non-agricultural employment and welfare index, etc. The article mainly discusses the population size. of village merger through the relevant data analysis: taking full consideration to the school infrastructure construction, the population size merged is not fall below 3306 and more than 14876; under the precondition of agricultural mechanization, the population size is between 6980 and 8377; considering above two factors, the optimum size of the population is 6980-7438 in our plain village.(3) By analyzing the data of Shanguoyuan District, this article proves that the optimum size of the population predicted is more scientific, and confirms that village merger can increase land areas, non-agricultural employment and improve the efficiency of rural infrastructure construction. In addition, according to the experience of Tengzhou city, the paper points out some more scientific, more effective implementation recommendations:in order to expedite the pace of village merger, we can make full use of the compensation mechanism of land appreciation; in order to improve the efficiency of agricultural mechanization, we can build up a rural land cooperation organization; in order to ensure the successful implementation of village merger, we should formulate relevant laws and regulations; considering the habit of living, we can live in a way that combining tall buildings and low apartments.
