Moral Analysis Of Philanthropy In Modern China

In modern China, philanthropy is a new topic with both theoretical and practical meanings. As an important means of regulating social wealth redistribution, philanthropy has played a huge role in narrowing wealth gap, alleviating social conflicts, securing social justice, and promoting social harmony. It is in modern China where natural disasters frequently occur, gap between rich and poor keeps deepening, and vulnerable groups increase by the day that philanthropy。Philanthropy indicates the behavior done by the actors in favor of others and society under the guidance of a certain charity concept. It is manifested in free help behavior of individual or group to vulnerable social groups in ways of donations and volunteer services. It is characterized with voluntary motivation, free of value demands, global space, and time persistence and so on. The moral value of philanthropy is reflected in its effect of deepening the individual sense of responsibility, strengthening individual moral self-discipline, promoting individual moral character, fostering social harmony, and optimizing morality, etc. In modern China, although philanthropy has achieved some progress in respect of charity actors and means, there are still some issues existent such as the lack of awareness, organization dysfunction, and inadequate protection, which arise mainly due to various problems concerning traditional Chinese ideas, charity organizations'credibility, government roles, and laws and regulations, etc.To promote philanthropy in modern China, actions should be taken in regulating the following aspects: moral education, moral self-discipline, charity environment. Moral education is popularized through imparting philanthropy concepts, publicizing philanthropy model, and innovating philanthropy activities; to realize its value philanthropy concept must be transformed into moral self-discipline, especially for charity organizations, whose credibility should be strengthened and supervised; a good charity environment could be created through media's propaganda, sound legal protection mechanisms, and transformation of government functions, and so on.
