The dissertation is a feasibility study on The Modern Illustrative Pictographic Literacy Teaching Program on Malaysian Preschool Children.Based on the concept of Pictography in Philology, a set of cards, by the name of Modern Illustrative Pictographic Character Card was designed and implemented for the Teaching Program. The Cards consist of 100 Chinese characters selected from the Chinese Vocabulary for Primary One in Malaysian Chinese schools, the characters were then designed in the form of illustrative pictogram. With the support of strategic activities, the Cards were used in the experimental teaching program for the feasibility study.The experimental teaching program was conducted on 3 subject groups, namely Group (1), Group (2) and Control Group. Chinese character teaching and tests were taken respectively in the research; data collected from the tests was processed by One-way and Two-way Analysis of Variance (AVOVA) for the purpose of assessment on the memorization of characters learned.Result from the assessment by AVOVA was then analyzed under the scope of philology, child psychology, Chinese literacy and experimental teaching. The findings of the study show that The Modern Pictographic Literacy Teaching Program is feasible.In addition, the findings also show that The Modern Illustrative Pictographic Literacy Teaching Program which combines pictures and characters, not only providing linguistic knowledge, but also widening the scope of imagination and upgrading the development of imaginal thinking of the young children. The learning of Chinese characters was no longer confined to the boring traditional text books, but through a learning process that comes with liveliness, bright images and fun.In a broader perspective, The Modern Illustrative Pictographic Characters Teaching Program, as a beginner's program, provides a solution to the learning of Chinese characters, therefore is a good choice of teaching material in Chinese literacy learning among Chinese and Non-Chinese in Malaysia.
