Objective: "Will Power Scale for Teenagers" is tested on some junior middle school students to measure their state of willpower and to compare the differences of the characteristic of the willpower between sex, grade, school and region. Meanwhile, junior middle school students'participation in sports activities is also investigated so as to analyze its relevant to willpower. Finally, based on the result of the relevant research between sport activities and willpower, intervention is carried out in some PE classes to investigate how a specific sport may influence a certain dimension of willpower.Methods: The method of mental measurement and questionnaire survey are used to investigate the will power and the participation in sport activities of 4428 junior high school students. Quasi-experiment design including experimental group and control group is used to find out how sport activities influence a certain dimension of willpower. The performance of the middle distance running and the high jump as well as the willpower is measured before and after the intervention.Results:1. There are gender main effects in junior middle school students'total score and four dimensions of the will power. Female students significantly exceed male students in total score, self-consciousness, the self-restraint, independence and tenacity.2. The will power of the first grade students of junior middle school is significantly better than the other two grades and the will power of the second grade students are the worst.3. The will power of the students in key middle school is significantly better than the one in non-key middle school.4. Students in urban areas got significantly higher scores in self-consciousness, self-control, decisive and tenacity but significantly lower scores in independence than students in suburb areas.5. The more and longer junior middle school students take exercises the better their willpower. The dimension of self-consciousness is highly positively related to the kind of sports students take part in.6. The middle distance running training (800 meters) can obviously improve junior middle school students'tenacity, but the high jump training do not have an obvious effect on their decisiveness.Conclusion:1. Significant differences of the characteristic of junior high school students'willpower exists between gender, grades, schools and areas. The female student exceed the male student, the first grade students exceed the other two grades, the students in urban areas surpasses the one in suburb areas, and the students in the key middle school exceed the one in non-key middle school.2. Participates in the sports is advantageous in enhancing the junior middle school students'willpower.3. Tenacity may be improved through middle distance running training.
