The era of reading-image has already come. To keep up with the trend of the times, we should impose great importance on the illustrations in teaching materials and use them better. At present, although more and more illustrations can be found in biology textbooks, teachers do not realize the value of illustrations and students'capability of reading-image needs to be improved as well. In junior middle schools, both student learning interest and teaching quality in biology are going down. The author conducts a study on correlation between illustrations in junior biology textbooks and students learning interest and efficiency in biology. The purpose is to identify the feasibility of wakening student learning interest and improving teaching efficiency via using illustrations in teaching materials.By using the documentary information, questionnaire and observation method, this paper analyzes present status and problems of illustration teaching in junior biology, the impact of illustrations on student learning interest and learning efficiency. Study on the present status of illustration teaching in junior biology was conducted among students in 7th and 8th grades in Changzhou Cuizhu Secondary School via filling in questionnaires. For problem analysis, the author invited some teachers from all schools in Changzhou to attend an internet survey. Based on information collected from these two surveys, the author has analyzed the correlation between different types and different teaching methods of illustration and students' learning interests. The study shows that, if we want to waken students'learning interests via illustrations, features of both illustrations and students'learning interests should be fully considered to improve teaching effectiveness.Taking representative study contents in the textbook by education department in Jiangsu Province for example, teaching practice has been carried out from three aspects:making a good use of existing illustrations; enriching illustrations in current teaching materials and making illustrations dynamic. Illustration teaching will be more successful if teachers follow the process of study, innovation and reassessment, while students follow the way of involvement, design and presentation. However, currently teachers are hard to find cooperators and supporters of teaching discussion, while students lack time and efforts in biology study. These are major problems to impact illustration teaching. Experiments indicate that illustration teaching draws students'attention on illustrations, improving their capability of image-reading, wakening students'interests on biology and dramatically increase effectiveness of biology teaching. Further study aiming improving student learning interest and efficiency via illustration teaching is needed.
