This article is written mainly from the contemporary Chinese teaching practice, through the profound and detailed analysis of Xia Mianzun's Chinese teaching thought about formalism, comparing their respective characteristics of Xia Mianzun's four works——Wen Zhang Zuo Fa, Kai Ming Guo Wen Jiang Yi, Guo Wen Bai Ba Ke, and Wen Zhang Jiang Hua, so as to find the differences and similarities of four works and explore the development path of Xia Mianzun's fromalism, and try to dig out some instructive guidelines for the contemporary Chinese teaching and some reference values for constructing new textbook system. These four works:Wen Zhang Zuo Fa, Kai Ming Guo Wen Jiang Yi, Guo Wen Bai Ba Ke, and Wen Zhang Jiang Hua, embody Xia Mianzun's formalism from the varying degrees. They focus on learning Chinese from the formal aspects of the Chinese characters——grammar, syntax and the expression methods, but these four works state the differences with regard to the knowledge system, anthology application and the focus of manifestations of some Chinese characters. Through the comparative studies of these four works, we can easily find that Xia Mianzun's formalism is gradually variational. It is of vital significance for guiding the Chinese teaching and the textbook compilation, therefore the aims of this research lie in concentrating on the development path of Xia mianzun's formalism through the comparative study of these four works, and further digging out the instructive significance and value for the comtemporary Chinese teaching practice, effectively improving Chinese teaching efficiency, finally promoting the contemporary Chinese teaching to a higher level on the whole.
