According to"New Standard Curriculum", much emphasis is placed on guiding pupils to do after-school reading at the primary stage. The term"the accumulation of language"is first written in the standard. It is said that teachers should create suitable surroundings to help pupils read more books and ask them to discuss their gained knowledge after reading. Such aim can be attained not only through the guided reading in class but also a large amount of reading after class.In modern society, with the development of science and technology and the rapid advancement of knowledge and information, human being's material and cultural lives have changed. Reading, as an important part of the spiritual activity, is integrated in all the fields of everyday life. After-school reading is an indispensable part of Chinese language teaching rather than a supplement. Therefore, it is necessary to raise the efficiency of pupils'after-school reading.In this article, the writer analyses the current situation of the pupils'after-school reading. Investigations are conducted on the real circumstances in several primary schools in Kunshan, such as the interest and habit, reading methods, the content of reading, time spent on reading and how parents guide their children's reading. Some problems are discovered such as the lack of interest and time, the narrow content of reading and inflexible reading methods. By analyzing the causes, the writer tries to guide pupils'after-school reading in three aspects. Through the effort of teachers, families and students, by cultivating comfortable environment and keen interest, the writer tries to work out effective methods to guide after-school reading and help pupils form good habits so as to enhance their language attainment.
