The modern society attaches great importance to knowledge, college students should make the most use of college years to study hard and constantly improve the ability to acquire knowledge, which is of vital importance. As the society calls for sports talents of high quality, college P.E. major students should put a premium on studies and the development of the ability to learn, for which the basic way is to develop autonomous learning ability. The previous studies focus more on autonomous learning for college students, while little for college P.E. major students. The thesis is to investigate the status quo of autonomous learning for college P.E. major students, analyze the problems of autonomous learning for them and propose strategies to improve their autonomous learning ability in order to meet the social demand for sports talents of high quality. The thesis makes an investigation of the status quo of autonomous learning for 332 college P.E. major students in Soochow University, who are from different grades and different majors of P.E. The methods used in this thesis include documentation method, self-report inventories, questionnaire method and mathematical statistics.1 College students majoring in physical education have a low level of autonomous learning ability and a weak consciousness of autonomous learning.2 Among students from different majors of P.E., sports training major students are the lowest in autonomous learning ability, differing from students majoring in physical education and sports science of human body in the ability of autonomous learning and differing from traditional sports majors in the aspect of leaning strategies. The students majoring in physical education show the greatest capability in autonomous leaning. 3 Among students from different grades, there is a significant difference between those from Grade 2009 do the better than those from Grade 2008 and Grade 2007 in the four dimensions of self-regulation, leaning strategies, content and environment as well as learning motivation. And students from Grade 2007 have an advantage over those from Grade 2008 in the aspects of leaning strategies and learning motivation.4 Female college P.E. major students are superior to male counterparts in both self-regulation and learning motivation.5 The academic performance in theory study for college P.E. major students is correlated positively with their autonomous learning ability. Their performance in skill acquisition is better than that in theory study. Students have a weaker autonomous learning ability in technical skill classes and are poor in preparation and revision of the technical skill classes.Development Strategies:1 Considering the internal causes, in order to improve college P.E. major students'autonomous learning ability, the students should enhance leaning motivation and self-efficacy as well as pay more attention to leaning strategies and the control of emotions towards study.2 Considering the external causes, college P.E. major students need the teachers'guidance and good learning environment so as to improve their autonomous learning ability,3 College P.E. major students should strengthen their self-regulating ability and strive for high efficiency in study based on the theory of PDCA theory, following the procedures of self-planning, self-enforcement, self-examination and self-management.
