Inquiry-based teaching has been an important teaching form in geography class. It is also a necessary approach for geography teachers in high school. However, most of the time students fail to finish the activities themselves due to lacking lf certain background knowledge. Thus it's a must for teachers to provide abundant materials for students to help them complete the tasks. This inquiry activity is what the author intends to research in geography class.To begin with, the author defines the characteristics of inquiry–based learning in geography class, that is, the author gets them by comparing inquiry in geography class and inquiry teaching, inquiry in geography class and research learning. Firstly, the biggest difference between inquiry teaching in geography class and inquiry teaching is that the former sets limit to the time used in the activities. Secondly, for the time limit, it's hard for students to finish the activities, which means can get a relatively completed and independent knowledge contents and ideas of research method in knowledge. Also, in the process, there is some necessary background knowledge which needs giving by teachers, that is another key point in this research paper: strategies of using the inquiry materials.Before analyzing the strategies of using inquiry materials, the author did a research into the general application lf inquiry materials among high school teachers. The results are as follows: what inquiry materials frequently used among high school teachers are : words, videos, ,flash, diagram, self-made teaching tools and so on. Meanwhile the author found most teachers usually obtain these materials by downloading and copying in order to save time. Thus they ignore an important problem: materials without selecting may have a negative effect on the students in the process of inquiry-based leaning. Therefore, the author drew a conclusion: the materials given in class must be selected with specific purpose by teachers first. Furthermore, the author put forward some process and present strategies of inquiry materials based on the analysis of proper inquiry learning relevant to basic geography knowledge in high school classes.
