The nature of Chinese literature and language has always been the subject of literary debate and research. Solving this question provides guidance both to research in literature and language courses and to teaching。Since the year 1903, when Chinese literature and language officially became an distinct and independent field of study, the nature of Chinese literature and language has always been at the forefront of issues studied by its scholars。However, due to complexity and diversity of Chinese literature and language, as well as societal, historical, and cultural differences, opinions on Chinese literature and language vary. The largest debate on Chinese literature and language is whether it should be used as a tool for communication, the instrumental approach or used to enrich mankind, the humanistic approach。This paper is based on predecessor's research. It first differentiates Chinese literature and language, touching upon the concepts of literature and language, instrumentalism, and humanism. It integrates Marx's"Spiral"interpretation, and proposes that is has relevance in the nature of Chinese literature and language - that the relationship between the instrumental approach and the humanistic approach should assume a spiraling state. Furthermore, taken together, the cognitive development law,the gradient rule of learning, the content of literature and language learning, and the cultivation of students'abilities, indicate that the integration of the instrumental approach and the humanistic approach is dynamic, staged, and balanced. Finally, with the purpose of guiding modern-day literature and language education, this paper uses language usage, reading, and writing examples to analyze how the integration of the instrumental approach and the humanistic approach guides the teaching of language and literature.
