Facing with the increasing popularity of higher education, and with a focus on innovation and development, the party and the state have started trials for independent colleges. With the development of higher education for decades, independent colleges, as a recent phenomenon have experienced the process of establishment, standardization and development. Not only have they innovated a mode of running schools, but also they have met people's increasing needs for higher education.Moreover,they have become an important part of higher education.With the further development of economy, technology and society, our state's demand for high quality people has increased as well. As a result, the connection between independent college and society has become closer and closer. Therefore, to keep their own independence and pursuit of value, the independent colleges should be able to take the responsibility that society has given them.Independent colleges'social responsibilities is a hot topic in nowadays. All circles of the society have realized the importance of developping social responsibilities for independent colleges. With the development of higher education, independent colleges'status and mission have changed greatly and they are playing an important role in the development of society. Under this circumstance, independent colleges'social responsibilities should not be treated in the traditional way. It's urgent for independent colleges to understand and take the proper mission in the new environment. Independent colleges can not develop by themselves. They need understanding and support from the whole society. Study of independent colleges'social responsibilities is of great importance to the developmentof the independent colleges, higher education and the whole society.This thesis consists of three main aspects as follows:Firstly, The definition of relevant concepts. Independent colleges' characteristics and content are clarified. Then the research began with such definitions as "responsibility" and "social responsibility". Also definition has been given to independent colleges' social responsibility. Through analyzing social esponsibility of other colleges and enterprises similar to independent colleges, the writer proposes the definition and main content of independent colleges' social responsibility.Secondly, The situation of independent colleges fulfilling their social responsibility and the analysis of its causes. For the content of its social responsibility, the writer has taken its current development into consideration, focusing on four aspects: the development of higher education; personnel training and transition; reform and innovation of higher education system; services for the local economy. Therefore, this thesis has confirmed independent colleges' current accomplishment.The problems of independent colleges'fulfilling social responsibilities: pursuing economic profits rather than social responsibilities, inaccurate standard of personnel education, lacking of responsibilities for students and their parents, lacking of administration regulations and duties not fully taken, social influence not enough and lacking enthusiasm for fulfilling social responsibilities. The inner and outer factors for these problems are explored in this part.Thirdly: Path selections by independent colleges to fulfill their social responsibility. This part reveals three problems as follows:finiteness, diversity and identification. It also reveals its concrete path selections in fulfilling social responsibility: setting down agreement of social responsibilities to make a clear goal, confirming the orientation to direct independent colleges'development; strengthening regulations to provide better policies; improving the quality of personnel training to make a good foundation for independent colleges; connecting independent colleges with society to perform their social service actively; strengthening government's control to create better social environment for independent colleges.
