The instructors of higher vocational institution play a critical role in the education process of students. In addition to organizing, coordinating and supervising the class, they must take the responsibilities of guiding, managing and educating students. Most freshmen that just step into a higher vocational institution can not adapt themselves to the role change. They generally feel inadaptable to the new environment to a greater or less extent along with such negative psychological experiences as poor self-care competence, intense loneliness, tense interpersonal relationship, learning disorder, goal missing and psychological confusion. Consequently, these negative psychological experiences lead to many psychological problems such as anxiety, impulsiveness, unsociability, inferiority and lack of learning interest, which adversely affect their normal study lives and even result in extreme statements and actions as well as unexpected incidents. Concerning these negative psychological experiences that freshmen go through and considering the characteristics of students in higher vocational institutions, an instructor must improve his or her competences and quality continually, innovate new working approaches and show kindness, cares, patience, persistence, tolerance and responsibility to the students to help the freshmen suit such a role change as soon as possible.This paper consists of three parts. The first part made an analysis to the basic backgrounds of instructors and freshmen of higher vocational institutions. For the instructors of higher vocational institution, this part introduces the definition, importance, role and specific requirements given by the government. For the freshmen of higher vocational institutions, this part demonstrates their strengths, weakness and special groups in detail. The second part made an analysis of the problems presently existing in the freshman instructors' work in higher vocational institutions, which include mainly failure to advance the interpretation of freshman instructor with the times, outdated educational concepts, poor education background and low professional title, insufficient sense of role, unstable career target, poor professionalism, bad work style and lack of innovation sense due to professional differentiation. The third part provides suggestions concerning the problems listed in the second part. Based on an countermeasure analysis on how to assume a qualified freshman instructor, the author elaborates this part in six aspects, as include improving the working rules of freshman instructor, establishing correct educational concepts, enhancing the construction of freshman instructor team, strengthening the sense of responsibility, rectifying the work styles, preparing correct orientation education to freshmen and innovating the working methods as freshman instructor. These suggestions are expected to inspire the freshman instructors of higher vocational institutions in their future works. The principal argument of this paper is presented on the basis of an basic knowledge of freshmen and freshman instructors in higher vocational institutions and upon an analysis of the problems presently existing in the instructor work. After investigating the causes to these problems, the author offered some suggestions on how to optimize the instructor work in higher vocational institutions and how to improve the work efficiency and effects.
