Land is rare and valuable natural resources. Its rational use is directly related to sustainable social and economic development. With reform and the opening-up policy, various undertakings have rapidly developed in China. Meanwhile, there exists increasingly prominent contradiction between economic development and limited land resources, specifically between land supply and demand for land. Therefore, in the process of urban development, intensive land use is an inevitable choice. The evaluation and analysis of the potential for the intensive use of urban land is the key to solve the problems in urban development. The subject of this paper is selected from The Analysis of the Potential in Urban Land Use Intensification and Policy Choice sponsored by the National Social Science Fund (09BZZ024). Based on relevant theories and research methods, this paper will evaluate and analyze the potential for intensive land use in downtown Bijie, and propose suggestions of exploring the potential for intensive land use. This paper includes six parts as follows:1. This paper studies the concepts of intensive use of urban land, and makes literature review on current intensive land use.2. This paper proposes ideas of the potential for making intensive use of urban land. Based on the analysis of factors influencing intensive land use, this paper classifies the potential for intensive land use, and presents the measurement and feasibility of the potential.3. From the aspects of land use structure, land investment intensity, land use intensity, land output efficiency and land use sustainability,19 indicators are selected to establish the potential evaluation index system of intensive land use, and AHP is employed to determine weights. Besides, multi-level evaluation model is applied in the potential for intensive land use in downtown Bijie.4. Based on the evaluation of the potential, this paper analyzes the potential for intensive land use in downtown Bijie from the aspects of structure, input, output and strength, and estimates the potential value.5. Through the analysis of various types of the potential, this paper sums up the time sequence of exploring the potential for intensive land use in downtown Bijie, and proposes that exploring the potential should follow the model " management potential—structure potential—strength potential—growth potential". Moreover, this paper puts forwards some proposals and measures about promoting the level of exploring intensive land use in Bijie city. 6. Based on these studies, this paper gives expectations of further research.
