Since reform and opening, the farmland decreased along with the rapid economic development in Yangzhou City. Although the land conversion was broken off in 1997, the decrease of farmland is still accelerated in recent years. This thesis studies the changes of farmland in Yangzhou City and their driving factors after reform and opening. Based on the above analysis, some suggestion on farmland protection in Yangzhou City was given. The six chapters of this thesis are as follows:Chapter I:Introduction. This part mainly introduced the objects and significance of the thesis, and makes a summary on former studies about land conversion. Then, the main content, structure, methods, framework of this thesis wer also introduced in brief.Chapter II:Present status of land use in Yangzhou City. This part analyzes the status and structure of land use in Yangzhou City, characterized by high cultivation index, less per capita farmland, heavy carrying capacity of land and high proportion of farmland. Then, some problems such as less reserved farmland, difficult exploitation, inefficient land use and production, farmland decrease and soil degeneration were analyzed.Chapter III:Analysis on farmland changes in Yangzhou City. This part firstly summarized the decrease trend of farmland in Yangzhou City as the following four courses: from slowness to speediness, then to quickness, and back to slowness and speediness. Then, the changes of farmland and their difference in each counties of Yangzhou City were analyzed.Chapter IV:Studies on driving factors of farmland changes in Yangzhou City-theoretical analysis. This part analyzed the driving factors of farmland changes in theory such as population increase, economic development, public policies on farmland protection and technical advancement, etc. Chapter V:Studies on driving factors of farmland changes in Yangzhou City-positive analysis. This part built an econometric model to test the driving factors of farmland changes using the data from 1980 to 2006 in Yangzhou City. The results showed that population increase, economic development and technical advancement are the main factors, and the public policies have the effects on farmland changes.Chapter VI:Conclusion and suggestion. This part drew the conclusion of the above analysis and put forward some suggestion on farmland protection in the near future.
