The construction of a large number of China’s highway has greatly promoted therapid development of high-quality, high-speed tire. At the same time, higher demandsfor the quality of mixing rubber and mixing equipment have been proposed, soaccelerating the update of mixing equipment is becoming urgently needed in additionto improve formulation and process. Tandem internal mixer is based on the basis oftraditional mixer. Due to the advantages of energy saving, low temperature and higherefficiency, it has become a key research topic of many countries nowadays. This articleis based on this situation to investigate the mixing mechanism and the practicalperformance of the tandem internal mixer by designing experiments.Consult literature, collect relevant information and understand the tandem mixingtechniques, and then design this new internal mixer device in series.The tandemprocess works with a combination unit consisting of a ram mixer and a ramless mixerbelow it. According to the mixing mechanism of tandem,The overall structure oftandem mixer, rotor configuration and cooling systems were improved on the basisof traditional mixer, the mixing process and mechanism of the new equipment wasstudied and analyzed. The problem of inefficiency and exhaust could also be solved.High production efficiency and mixing quality could be obtained with the help of thisequipment.The experimental research is helpful to master further enlarge the design oftandem internal mixer, and to use reliable theoretical and experimental data properly. Itwill be very helpful to lay the theoretical foundation for the development andpromotion.The main research work and achievements of this paper include: (1) Physical and mathematical models of the tandem mixer were initially set upand the mixing mechanism was discussed;(2) According to the mixing mechanism of the tandem mixer, tandem mixerexperimental platform was designed;(3) With the help of finite element software, the rotor flow field, rotor cooling androtor phase are analyzed,and then the rotor type that was suitable for the processrequirements of tandem internal mixer was finalized;(4)Traditional period of mixing was studied through experiment. Two-stagemixing experiments under different parking time were studied and the experimentalresults were that the best parking time was8hours;(5)The mixing effect of tandem internal mixer was studied by orthogonalexperiment design, and optimum parameter of downstream mixer was determined.Theoptimal technological parameter: the cooling water temperature is30°C, mixing timeis80~90s, the rotor speed is30r/min, and the fill factor is0.35. And then thetraditional section, two-stage mixing and tandem internal mixer were compared.TheThe results showed that the mixing performance of tandem internal mixer was moreexcellent;(6) Rotor cooling water temperature of tandem internal mixer downstream mixer,mixing time of downstream, rotor speed of downstream and fill factor of downstreammixer were studied and the impact of different process on the performance of tandeminternal mixer was finally determined.The developed tandem internal mixer is feasible through theoretical study, finiteelement analysis and experimental studies in the paper. The structure of designedtandem internal mixer is unique. Tandem internal mixer has excellent mixingperformance than the traditional two-stage mixing, and there are some advantages insaving energy, improving efficiency and maintaining the mixing quality and stability.There is some important guiding significance for further development and industrialapplication.
