The structure of switched reluctance motor is simple and its operation is flexible based on itsconvincible reliability and certain fault tolerance. In recent years, the application of switchedreluctance motor has been more and more extensive in the areas such as aerospace,mechanicalmanufacturing and so on. With the advancement of aerospace technology, more electric aircraft andall-electric aircraft will be one research focus of the industry in the future. In addition, the applicationof switched reluctance motor on some kind of U.S. fighter planes enhances the attention paid onswitched reluctance starter/electricity generator system.If the motor winding is divided into two parts and equipped with an independent converter and acontroller, a two-channel switched reluctance starter/electricity generator system is constituted, withits reliability and fault tolerance further improved. For the entire system, the motor winding,transformer and controller are its major components in the operation, while are also considered asrelative vulnerable parts in aspect of the reliability. These parts perform high failure rate relatively. Inthe case of failure without timely removal or control, the breakdown of the entire system will beinduced possibly. Currently, although many studies have explored into the design of the switchedreluctance motor, its operation control methods and the main circuit topology, few probed into theanalysis of its malfunction and fault-tolerance of switched reluctance motor/electricity generatorsystem. In all the faults, failures happened in switching tube of the main circuit and motor windingoccupy a significant proportion, most of which will evolve into the phase failure. Thus, this paper, onthe basis of the analysis of phase failure, underlines the fault-tolerant study of phase failure, andenhances the reliability and fault tolerance under the condition of failure.Firstly, the starter/generator system of the switched reluctance motor is introduced in the paper.Then, the research status of fault diagnosis and fault tolerance control is studied. Meanwhile, thesignificance and arrangement of the research is illustrated.Next, the composition and structure of the starter/generator system of the switched reluctancemotor is analyzed, including its the basic working principle, the main control plan, and the advantagesand disadvantages, and the structure of the starter/generator system of the two-channel switchedreluctance motor.On this basis, JMAG modeling for the starter/generator system of12/8two-channel switchedreluctance motor is conducted. A simulation study of the normal condition, the phase fault condition, and the fault-tolerant control of phase fault is carried out to get power generation characteristics andfault condition characteristic.A new experimental platform is built mainly based on dsPIC33F SCM and CPLD. The ratedvoltage is270V and the rated power is7.5kW. Finally, power generation and fault tolerant controlexperiments are conducted on this experimental platform to accomplish single and double channelpower generation of the system., simulate the fault state and study three kinds of fault-tolerant controlscheme. In addition, experiments are carried out to verify the simulation results, optimize systemcontrol method and finish the fault-tolerant control of the entire system.
