The Research And Application Of The Traditional Residential Windows Of Southern Hunan

There are a large number of traditionalmansions, which aretheminiature of the history of people’s lives in Southern Hunan and important totheChinese architectural culture, preserved in Southern Hunan. Windows, regarded asthe decorative components of residential buildings, contain unique value in respect of history, art and culture. Thus, investigating the traditional residential windowscould be meaningful for usto understand all kinds of types, styles, decoration and culturessystematically and completely, toprovide endless ideas of modern design, as well as to create styles belonged to local design characteristics and toevoke the pride and identity for traditional architectural culture.This article, throughreferences scanning and field research, analyses and classifies the shape characteristics, setting rules and decorative features of traditional residential windows in Southern Hunan area. Besides, it reveals the significance and application in the modern design. Following contents are contained in this article:(1) Research on the background of traditional residential windows in Southern Hunan. We analyzed and summarized the distribution and types of the traditional residential windows, according to the geographical environment, climate characteristics, history and culture. Wealso established the coordinate repository of traditional residential mansions, which laid the foundation of traditional windows.(2) Research on the process of traditional residential windows in Southern Hunan. Throughthe field research and reference scanning, we firstly elaborated the overview of these windows,then analyzedtheir structure, the function and the location.At the same time, we discussed the regular setting patterns and rules on the location and volume of the windows respectively.(3) Research on the decoration of traditional residential windows in Southern Hunan. Wesummarized the decorative parts, styles and techniques and we focused on the decorative patterns and implied meaning of these windows.Meanwhile, we discussed the cultural connotationreflected by these patterns. (4) Discussion on the significance and application in the modern design of traditional residential windows in Southern Hunan. Based on the complied data, We discussed how to inherit and create the value of traditional residential windows among the modern architectural, interior and landscape design, and also generalized the application laws of traditional residential windows in modern design.This paper, baseon the background of traditional residential windows, analyzed and summarized theircharacteristics of shape and decoration. For their further inheritance and innovation, vitally important isthe way of their application applying to the modern design.
