Human created their homes which are architectures and environment as well. China's traditional folk houses are historical legacy holding ordinary people. As the basis of China's traditional architecture, it is the result selected by the people from the life and production, which indicates a concept of sustainable development and harmony between human and the environment. These houses are characterized by such features as nationality, locality, aesthetes, customs, beliefs, folk arts and so on. With the rapid growth of modern society, cities are built regardless of the consequence, culture of traditional folk houses is lost and eco-system are getting deteriorated. People have realized the importance of traditional folk houses with abundant historical and cultural elements.Hunan has a vast territory housing many minorities who built different houses with their own characteristics. Anyhow, these houses have much in common in terms of the construction mode, living mode, natural environment and culture. This thesis, taking the social concept, cultural mode and living mode as the starting point and based on traditional and simple eco-theory, makes a research of the ecological feature of the traditional folk houses in Hunan in terms of the ecological and human features, which are couple with some typical examples.The first chapter is an introduction to explain the research background, methods and scope of the study. The second chapter is the cause of the traditional residential environment and ecology concept on the traditional culture and ecology, as well as Hunan's natural environment and social environment.The third and forth chapter is the main part of this article, summed up the Hunan's traditional residential environment to extract the natural ecological characteristics and Humanities ecological characteristicsThe fifth chapter is the conclusion of this paper, the protection of traditional residential areas today and the future residential ecological environment to create some of his own knowledge and views.This thesis will help the spread of the concept of traditional folk houses and eco-technology and offer evidence for the protection of ecology of humanity and nature of the traditional folk houses in Hunan. At the same time, it keeps an eye on the development of the times and culture, considers the living customs and need of Hunanese and offers constructive, view and cognition to the creation of future eco-living environment of Hunan without losing its own characteristics.
