The canal settlement is different from the traditional historical settlement.Because its completion, development or change is closely related to variousconstruction activities of the canal. Wherefore the paper selects the canalsettlement as the object of the paper. The canal settlement contains all kinds ofintangible cultural heritage and non-material cultural heritage. The canalsettlement is an important component of the heritage of the Grand Canal.Based on the study of the settlement of formation and development,morphology, composition remains, landscape pattern, the paper mainly confer howto compile protection planning.The paper is composed by three main parts as follows:The first part is introduction of background canal settlement.The chapter one introduces the concept of the canal settlement, background,methods, purpose and significance.The chapter two summarizes domestic and international theoretical researchand planning practice of protection of waterfront areas in inland urban.The second part’s important is analysis of the canal settlements.The chapter three firstly introduces the Factors of the canal settlement’sformation, development and decadence. Secondly, it analyzes the present situationof the settlement and generalizes the major problems facing. Besides, it analyzesthe heritage constitutes of the canal settlement. Finally, according to the earlierstudies, it summarizes the key points of the protection planning.The third part searches how to compile protection planning.The chapter four introduce the determining rule of protect zoning, theprotective measures of various heritage types, the methods of improvement theliving environment.The chapter five introduces the heritage of exhibition and use ways andprotection management measures.
