A Study On Chen Zhanxiang’s City Planning Thoughts And Practice

To study the history of modern city planning in China’s well-known city planner Chen Zhanxiang and his city planning thoughts and practice, thereby filling the blank on the research of his city planning thoughts in china’s modern city planning history, and make a contribution to China’s modern history of city planning, while helping us to a comprehensive summary of the experiences in aspects of city planning since the founding of new China, make service for the new period of urbanization.This article is divided into four parts for research and evaluation in Chen Zhanxiang and his planning thoughts. The first part focuses on illustrate Chen Zhanxiang’s whole city planning life, including study in The Lester School and Henry Lester Institute of Technical Education, then study in the UK while studied under Pro. Sir Patrick Abercrombie who was the host of" Great London Plan ", and participated in the planning and design work of the three towns in the " Great London Plan ". And the task of planning experience in the national period after returning to China in1947, and a variety of city planning activities since the founding of new China. The second part emphatically elaborates the comprehensive analysis and comment in the contents and influence of two national administrative center:"General Outline Draft of Capital Political Area Plan" and " the advice about Central People’s government administrative center location "while Chen Zhanxiang had returned and made successively in the capital of Republic of China, Nanjing and the capital of the People’s Republic of China, Beijing. In addition, Chen Zhanxiang’s city planning practice in the various cities of China after reform and opening up is also the focus of this article, in this period he paid more attention to the combination of the theory of regional planning, theory of organic decentralization and China’s national conditions, what obtained the certain effect in construct the cities, as Hangzhou and Shenzhen. At last, summarize his academic contribution to the city planning, including translated works and comments in city planning.Chen Zhanxiang devoted his life to improve China’s city planning and designing standards, summarize the experience at home and abroad to study the content and methods of city planning for China’s national conditions, pioneering works in china’s city planning in "following the trend". I collect historical facts with Chen Zhanxiang’s information as much as possible. Then make a systematic and comprehensive analysis and comment to him, and his architecture and city planning ideas. I hope to improve the incomprehensive status of Chen Zhanxiang’s city planning thoughts in academia.
