In order to renovate product more quickly, researchers put forward study on product and process renovate design method. With the emergence and development of knowledge engineering, they have promoted the further development of artificial intelligence and brought significant economic benefits and convenience of work. The design experiences during production and empirical knowledge accumulated from the feedback of design problem during production have significant influences to the efficient design and no-break production. With the promotion of artificial intelligence, it solves the problems of the lack of design specification and makes possibility that experts give empirical obscure value. Therefore, this paper combined with the theory of self-organization, proposed the study of variant design based on knowledge engineering, and the ultimate goal is to achieve more intelligent product variant design system.Main research work and achievements can be summarized as follows:(1) The variant design for mechanical product’s application was introduced, and the current variant design methods were summarized. Then the paper, combined with the theory of self-organization, gives the mapping relationship between self-organization and variant system.(2) The characteristics of the variant design were summarized, and the hierarchical modeling process suitable for variant design was built;(3) The classification of products according to the purpose and the corresponding definitions was proposed. Then for tool products-sheet metal stamping products, research, analysis of the characteristics of the product structure, and the product module partition were shown;(4) Knowledge base and database of sheet metal stamping products were built. The product parameters in the variant process were determined. Combined with the self-organization theory, the CBR reasoning was improved.(5) It verifies the method through the UG NX/Open platform with the example of metal plate punching mold.
