In recent years, more and more attention has been paid to the protection of old buildings, and reconstruction is one of the important ways of building protection and reuse. In the initial stage of the transformation and reuse of the old buildings, the designers mostly adopt the way of keeping the exterior facade of the building basically unchanged and integrating the interior space with the new functions. At first, this transformation method did have a breakthrough achievement. However, with the in-depth development of this subject, many designers applied the early transformation mode to various old buildings in order to seek new and fast, and lacked the consideration of its indoor space value, which led to the generalization of the early transformation mode and the lack of diversity of the transformation content.Firstly, the development status and existing problems of the interior reconstruction of old buildings at home and abroad are summarized, leading to the research value of this topic.Secondly, the development and preservation of Shikumen architecture in modern Shanghai are summarized, and the characteristics of its interior space,as well as its historical, cultural, artistic and other values are summarized. Moreover, the paper analyzes the relevant transformation cases, discusses theproblems that are easy to be ignored in practice, and sums up the basic principles and feasibility methods that should be followed in the indoor transformation of Shikumen building. Then,on the basis of the above research, through field research,we choose No.61 jinjiafang, old Chengxiang,Shanghai as the practice object.Based on the single living function of the Shikumen building, relying on the carrier of Shanghai traditional culture, the paper makes the transformation strategies from the aspects of indoor space, structure, facilities, etc.,providing new methods, angles and possibilities for the transformation and reuse of a large number of existing Shikumen buildings with poor living conditions and urgent need to be improved. Finally, the conclusion is drawn that the transformation of the interior space of the old building is conducive to the protection and reuse of the building, the revival of the historical block, the alleviation of the contradiction between people and buildings, history and reality, inheritance and innovation, and the rejuvenation and vitality of the old building.
