After China’s housing reform, the construction of settlements is in full swing. As anew concept of living "Gated Communities" starts to occupy the market of Settlementsdevelopment, it also begin to affect people’s living concept. When referring to"Communities", people’s think "closed" first, because the closure is on behalf ofsecurity and privacy; and according to "closed", people will mostly think of "isolation"and "differentiation.". Therefore, when doing research for this contradiction, we shouldnot easily say yes or no to its abstract concept, but by observing the performance of itsphysical form; analysising the impact on public field and the appearance of contributingfactors in the process of development and construction; and comprehensivelyunderstanding of the gated communities in order to find the optimal approach. From thispoint of view, urban design is an appropriate research perspective as being the followersof "public domain value" and "physical diversity".Overall, this article is divided into two parts: the level of epistemology and thelevel of methodology.Epistemological level: it firstly defines the relevant concepts and domestic andoverseas research overview, raising the whole perspective, and then reviews theevolution and characterization of domestic and overseas settlements. By deeplyrecognizing the gated communities under different national conditions to reiterate theresearch perspective—the dynamic effects of physical diversity;Methodological level: it consists of four parts. The first part, as a basic chapter ofmethodological level, shows the concept of urban design and its application methodaccording to our closed settlements research. The second part regards the typical gatedcommunities in Wuhan as an example to do practical investigation and analysis aboutgated communities, physical space form and its affect on public field values initiative as well as the process of development and management, exploring specific problems ofclosed settlements. The third part focuses on the actual analysis based on the spaceunder the optimization strategy from the size, function, space and other aspects of theclosure of settlements, guidance and control integration, trying to create the idealsettlements, spatial order. The last part gives suggestions about turning strategies intoinstitutional space policy and controlling construction process. This paper aims to complete the construction mechanism of gated community tocreate a space interacting with the city as a whole and to make secure and vital rules.
