In recent years, the construction of a strong and smart grid has become an important characterization of the national science and technology development for a country, also made great contribution to improving the international competitiveness, among this, the smart substation equipment is an important foundation for smart grid, and the on-line monitoring technology of substation equipment that based on the Internet of Things has become the main line of the future smart substation. In this paper, in order to achieve a comprehensive on-line monitoring of substation equipments, the new sensor technology, single chip technology, embedded technology and advanced Internet of Things communication technology were applied, in addition, the real-time monitoring and fault diagnosis of the substation equipment’s operation status was completed, which laid a solid foundation to the smart substation.The analysis of the smart substation’s on-line monitoring function and the architecture design of the on-line monitoring system in this paper were based on a lot of literature at home and abroad and the smart substation construction planning of our country. The smart substation on-line monitoring system was divided into four levels, such as process level, interval level, station level and production management system (PMS) of the provincial. The system monitored the status information of power transformers, circuit breakers, capacitive devices, surge arresters, and all other substation equipments status information via the new sensor technology, meanwhile transmitted them to the Interval level devices, through RS485/CAN/ZigBee/RFID/optical fiber, then the Interval level devices configured the status information to the data format which meet with the IEC61850standard, lastly all the data were transmitted to the station control center via fiber optic, and eventually entered the integrated information platform.This paper analyzed the equipments in the process level, including transformer oil chromatographic monitoring, partial discharge monitoring, cooler control monitoring, transformer bushing insulation monitoring, OLTC monitoring, core grounding current monitoring; circuit breaker monitoring, three-phase current monitoring, sub closing coil current monitoring, energy storage motor current monitoring, auxiliary switch status, SF6monitoring; and site monitoring unit for capacitive devices and as well, also gave the hardware and software design of the monitoring terminal for SF6gas process level, which used a DSP chip as the main design chip, and transferred the SF6monitoring data to the SF6gas monitoring IED via RS485;Analysis of the main categories in the interval level, including transformer IED, which was consisted of cooler control, partial discharge, gas in oil, core grounding, and insulating characteristics of load tap sub-IED; breaker IED, which containing mechanical properties, SF6gas monitoring IED; capacitive device IED, surge arresters IED. And gives the hardware and software design of SF6gas monitoring IED, which used a dual-core (ARM+DSP) chip design and adopted RS485and fiber optic communications technology.This article also analyzed the function of Expert Software in station level and the concrete realization of functions of SF6gas monitoring; the operational status of SF6circuit breaker was obtained accurately through the analysis of SF6gas temperature, density and pressure.Finally, gives the analysis of the on-site configuration installation and operation of on-line monitoring system for Hongqiao substation, Judged from the field monitoring data, the system was running fine, the monitoring data reflected the operational status of substation equipment truly, after data analysis we can get the equipment operation information and fault conditions accurately.The system we talked about had been successfully installed in Hongqiao220kV substation in Tangshan, one of the intelligent renovation projects of North China Grid, which has now passed the acceptance and put into operation.
