In the21st century, with the accelerated economic development and urbanization, the urban problems, such as overpopulated, urban sprawl, traffic congestion and otherissues appears in major cities of china, and has an increasing trend. The root of theproblems of these cities is the contradiction between urban transport and urban spacestructure. In order to solve these problems, many cities have put forward by rail toease traffic pressure and guide the city development strategy. Therefore, the correcthandling of rail transport and urban structure of the relationship and achievecoordinated development between the two is the inevitable choice of spatialdevelopment of major cities in China. From the development of the current situation, rail transit construction is in fullswing in major cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and other cities, rail transitopportunities in the international event has been under rapid development, construction scale and operational efficiencies are close to the world advanced level. However, the coordinated development of rail transport and urban spatial structure isstill insufficient. Therefore, faced with a specific stage of development of China’smajor cities, to study the relationship between the two, restructuring of rail transportfor the support of spatial structure, is of great practical significance. In this paper, theobject of the study is the relationship between rail transport and urban spatial structure, the study is separated into three parts. The first part of the study summarized the development history of urban railtransport and urban spatial structure, based on the absorption of all research, caseexperience and achievements, in order to achieve the coordinated development of railtransport and urban spatial structure, not only has to handle the rail traffic on thespatial structure of the adaptation and guidance, but also to coordinate the relationshipbetween the two levels of focus. According to the particular stage of the development, arrangements for the appropriate timing of rail transport. The second part of the studyanalyzed the size, shape, layout of urban rail transit and cities in developed countries, proposedthat our country should have light rail line network in the cities that have a population size up to1million, the rail line should reach to50km, have subway construction in the cities that have apopulation size up to2million, the line size of the network should reach to100km, and guide the city to form a suburban population of urban-based growth. The status quo under the form of urbanrail network mode selection form a ring at the regional network radial line shape and guide the cityfrom a single center centralized to distributed, multi-center space form model development; thestatus of public centers and populated areas are arranged center-based and non-center-type lines, ease urban traffic demand in the main, and guide the city to form a "center-tour-Network "shapethe spatial distribution pattern. Response relationship between the two a mixed type of coordinatedapproach to the target, distributed implementation in three phases, the primary goal was to solvethe traffic demand, and to guide the internal reorganization, then to guide external expansion. Thethird part of the study used Tianjin as a case evidence, combined with the first twoparts of the study, analyzed the rail transport development and urban spatial structurein Tianjin, summarized the coordinated development of both the advantages andproblems, then proposed three areas of nature adjust its strategy andrecommendations.
