Arrester is a kind of protective devices in electricity grid, which is used to protect power equipments from thunder and lighting. Due to arrester’s work environment is always outdoor, severe and wet, then it usually works in abnormal situation or even explodes, so to know working or damage state of the arrester all the times is essential to stability of the overall system.Traditional arrester monitoring facilities adopt spotty communication protocols and interoperability of the communication mode is poor. Especially, as growing requirement of power quality and increasing complexity of electricity grid composition, traditional communication protocols can not meet modern intelligent electricity grid’s demand any more. International electrotechnical commission (IEC) set IEC61850standards as the only uniform communication standard to satisfy needs of electricity grid technological development. This paper addresses monitoring information of arrester communicating according to IEC61850standard. Innovations and main content are shown as follows:1. The paper introduces technical features of IEC61850standard and models for arrester monitoring IED. Modeling steps and extension method are elaborated. The paper studies communication key technologies of IEC61850standard, such as abstract communication service interface (ACSI), specific communication service mapping (SCSM), etc. Mapping relation between IEC61850protocol and MMS protocol and the other mapping relation from MMS protocol to underlying protocol are further researched. Codes for related service of every layer are presented. Communication framework of ACSI+MMS+RFC1006+TCP/IP+topology+Windows is also designed.2. Adopting VC as development environment and using communication technology based on TCP/IP network, multithreading, menu association, CListCtrl control, tree control, client of arrester monitoring IED is developed. ARM9development board of S3C2440is chosen as server’s hardware platform, then server’s programs are developed in Linux environment, finally, the paper achieves the server functions, such as data process, coding, information transmission, etc. Communication between server and client is realized, communication of required services of arrester monitoring IED actual applied function is achieved, and communication to IEC61850products with imported MMS-EASE-Lite development package is implemented too. By using MMS Ethreal software to capture package, the paper validated the veracity of communication framework design and arrester monitoring IED modeling. Accuracy of protocols and relevant services coding are verified.3. Without MMS-EASE-Lite development package, communication conformed to IEC61850is realized by researching technologies, such as analysis of underlying protocols, coding, IED modeling, etc. IEC61850standard is specifically applied to arrester monitoring IED.
