Abelmoschus esculentus L. belonging to the family Malvaceae, is a kind of one year herbage plant,which is one of the most important vegetables widely grown in Nigeria for its tender fruits and youngleaves. It is easy to be cultivated and grows well in both tropical and temperate zones, that is, it iswidely planted from Africa to Asia, South European to America. Along with the discovery of itsnutrition, it’s widely cultivated in north and south China recent years. So, it’s urgent to select newcultivars to meet the demand of functional food. It’s meaningfull to seek functional components anddetermine the content of them in A. esculentus L. For the search of functional components and exploitthe resource, six beeds of it had been investgated in the paper. The main results were as follows:1.The chemical constitutes of A. esculentus L.fruit were systematically isolated by the use ofisolation methods such as extraction, recrystallization, TLC, silica gel column chromatography, RP-C18column chromatography, macroporous adsorptive resins(Diaion HP-20), gel chromatography(MCI-gelCHP-20, Toyopearl HW-40, Sephadex LH-20). Fifteen constituents from the methanol extract of A.esculentus L.were purified and obtained. Twelve components of them were identified by chemicalmethods and mass spectrography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectra(1H,13C-NMR,2D-NMR) and etc.They were5,7,3′,4′-tetrahydroxy flavonol-3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1â†'6)]-β-D-glucopyrano-side,5,7,3′,4′-tetrahydroxy flavonol-3-O-[β-D-rhamnopyranosil-(1â†'2)]--D-glucopyranoside,5,7,3′,4′-tetrahydroxy-4′′-O-methylflavonol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, quercetin, L-tryptophan, hexadecanoicacid, Isopropyl (9Z,12Z)–octadeca-9,12-dienoate, stigmasterol, stigmasterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside,uracil, isofurocoumarin, β-sitosterin. Among of which5,7,3′,4′-tetrahydroxy-4′′-O-methylflavonol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside is a novel flavonol glycoside, uracil, L-tryptophan,5,7,3′,4′-tetrahydroxyflavonol-3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1â†'6)]-β-D-glucopyranoside,5,7,3′,4′-tetrahydroxyflavonol-3-O-[β-D-rhamnopyranosil-(1â†'2)]--D-glucopyranoside were first isolated from this plant.2.The total phenolic acids (TF) and total flavonoids (TP) of A. esculentus L.were measured byUV-2102PCS method and the antioxidant activity of the methanol extract were evaluated by Infinite M200method.The results showed that the functional contents and antioxidant activity vary among everybreeds.3.The distribution of three kinds of glycosylflavones in the different breeds’partswere determined by reversed-phase HPLC.The determination of functional components among different breeds providedreference for the choose of efficient varieties.
