| As a research on the development of Teaching Mandarin as a foreign languagein Canada, this article discusses the ways to successfully establish Mandarinteaching programs among Canadian High schools in Ontario by lookingrespectively at Ontario International and Classical language teaching policyfor Gr.9to Gr.12, Canadian students’ foreign language learning interests,the demand for Mandarin teaching in Canadian high schools, and some otherperspectives including appropriate teaching methods to teach Canadianstudents Mandarin, ways to evaluate and assess student’s learning.Assisted by the theory and research on Foreign Language teaching, Teachingmethods for Mandarin as a foreign language, and Chinese as a Second languageAcquisition, this article offers a new perspective in analyzing a practicalway of establishing Mandarin teaching by taking a close look at the case ofSt. John’s-Kilmarnock School. The outcome of this analysis serves for futureMandarin program establishment in Canadian High Schools. This article offers a scientific proof of the feasibility of establishingMandarin program among Canadian High school, which is based on figurescollected from Canadian High Schools, while using research methods such asby giving questionnaires, interviewing, note taking, and some Statistical datacollecting methods. |
