As vocabulary is one of the three elementary factors of language, it is part oflanguage acquisition, including2ndlanguage acquisition. Known for its large number ofcharacters which often carry more than one meaning and are highly productive, theChinese language has a complicated vocabulary system which is significantly differentfrom its phonetic counterparts. While learning Chinese, foreign students have so many toremember as to the pronunciation, character, meaning and usage of every word, whichcould be very hard and may affect their efficiency and passion of learning Chineselanguage. Just like acquisition of any other skills, a word needs to occur frequently invarious contexts in listening, speaking, reading and writing skill trainings, for the learnerto turn his short-term memory of the word into long-term memory. A word can reoccur inpre-reading, in-class learning and exercises, which are primarily and maybe solely basedon textbooks. That’s why vocabulary recurring in textbooks of various courses during asemester can be very valuable and indispensable to the efficiency of vocabulary teachingand learning. The author makes a survey of recycling rate of new words listed in the textbooks of4courses including intensive reading, listening comprehension, speaking and intensivereading adopted for foreign students during their first and second year in Xinjiang NormalUniversity, and then gives some suggestions on the selection, combination andcompilation of TCFL textbooks. Based on statistics and analysis, the thesis consists of3parts, in the hope of offering some help to optimizing and localizing TCFL textbooks fornon-mainstream foreign students.
