Interpreting Methods Of Chinese Culture-loaded Expressions From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

The NPC and CPPCC is the abbreviation of National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.The NPC and CPPCC is considerably significant in Chinese people's political life.On the mainland of China,the NPC and CPPCC is hailed as"an important political event" and a large number of domestic and foreign media pay close attention to it.In the annual NPC and CPPCC,Chinese Premier will answer the questions of journalists from all over the world.The questions involve all variety of topics,such as politics,economy,culture,education,technology and diplomacy.In recent years,there appears an increasing number of culture-loaded expressions in Premier's press conference.Culture-loaded expression is also named culture-loaded word,cultural vacant word,lexical vacancy and culture-specific item,etc.That is to say,cultural information carried by the source text sometimes fails to have an equivalent expression in the target language.Language is a carrier of culture and is the foremost part of culture.Due to the difference in history,geography,literature and religion,different countries and regions have formed different cultures.Therefore,it is inevitable that there exist huge differences in their languages.Then naturally,culture-loaded expressions arise.Correctly understanding and accurately interpreting Chinese culture-loaded expressions could not only demonstrate Chinese culture but also enrich English culture and finally promote the exchange and coexistence of different cultures.Interpretation is both language transformation and transmission of cultural information.As a result,the interpretation of culture-loaded expression is a vital sign whether the interpretation activities are successful.However,in the process of press conference interpretation,culture-loaded expressions are somewhat untranslatable.Therefore,interpreting culture-loaded expressions brings huge challenges and difficulties for the interpreters.Research on culture-loaded expressions plays a pivotal role in interpretation activities,cultural exchange and communication.According to relevance theory,interpretation is actually a process of inference and searching for relevance.The object of interpretation requires that the target text should produce optimal contextual effect among the target listeners.In other words,the target listeners could find the optimal relevance between the source text and the target text.From the perspective of relevance,the author takes Chinese-English interpretation in the Chinese Premier's press conference from 2010 to 2014 as the research object and collected a total of 130 Chinese culture-loaded expressions,form which 34 are analyzed in detail.This thesis tries to analyze the difficulties and problems in the process of interpreting Chinese culture-loaded expressions,probe into the general strategies of interpretation and find out the methods applied by the interpreters to help target readers get optimal relevance,By the way of qualitative study,this thesis makes some conclusions:Relevance theory could guide the interpretation of culture-loaded expressions to a large degree;second,the cultural connotation of the source text should be retained as much as possible when the interpreters are dealing with Chinese culture-loaded expressions;third,the target language listeners' cognitive environment should be taken into full consideration.
