Translation Studies On The Symbolic Meaning Of Animal-and Botany-referent Words-from The Perspective Of Cultural Presupposition

This thesis starts with the discussion of cultural presupposition, and the differentcultural presupposition manifested in geography, living habits, allusions, religions andhistorical backgrounds. Due to the causes of these presupposed cultural differencesbetween English and Chinese languages, many difficulties come into being intranslation. Different translation principles and translation strategies make translationversions vary from translators to translators. To help readers smoothly read thetranslated versions of the original text, appropriate translation strategy and translationprinciples are fully discussed in this thesis. On the other hand, animal and botanywords have been playing an important part in the history of human beings, but thetranslation of these specific culture-loaded words are not unified, which sometimescause difficulties in understanding. Therefore, the thesis is going to study thesymbolic meaning of the animal-and botany-referent words from the perspective ofcultural presupposition, in the expectation that it will be of help to the translators tocome and to provide some help to the theorists; besides, to some extent it can behelpful in the cultural exchange. The research method in this thesis is case studies andanalysis. After all the listing and case studies, the conclusion indicates that intranslating those culture-loaded words, specifically animal-and botany-referent words,whether literal translation, free translation, or annotation should be used concerningdifferent purposes. Among all the causes that lead to mistranslation or inappropriatetranslation, cultural presupposition does affect a lot in translating animal-andbotany-referent words especially in the contextual sense.
