People provided various definitions of "faithfulness" by way of defining "literal translation and free translation", "faithfulness" and "translation". Now people have realized that translation is an activity of cross-cultural communication, and to be faithful means transferring the linguistic and cultural meanings to an enough extent. In history literal translation and free translation were not only discussed as methods of translation but also abided by as translation criteria. In fact literal translation means the higher level of faithfulness while free translation the lower level of faithfulness. However, all of this dealt only with the longitudinal aspects of faithfulness, i.e. whether there exists such a meaning or dimension of faithfulness. People neglected the latitudinal aspects of faithfulness i.e. whether such a dimension or meaning of faithfulness has been transferred to an enough extent.
