Interpreting, as an emerging occupation as well as an important means ofcross-cultural communication, is extensively used in today’s society where there areincreasingly frequent international exchanges. In particular, with China’s reform andopening up and the development of economic globalization, China has participated inmore international affairs, and much more international conferences have been heldhere, which makes the demand of interpreters increase at an unprecedented speed.Unfortunately, the shortage of high-quality interpreters is severe and the talent marketis now filled with those whose interpreting capability and professional quality are notgood enough. Then what kind of capabilities and qualities should a qualifiedinterpreter have? How to train a qualified interpreter to meet the market’s demand? Toanswer these questions, the author discusses the topic of quality training ofinterpreters through comparing translation and interpreting in this thesis. The thesis iscomposed of four chapters.In the first chapter, a comparison is made between interpreting and translation interms of their definitions,modes,processes and features. Through the comparativeanalysis, the conclusion is drawn that the differences between interpreting andtranslation are far more than the similarities. And although interpreting is based ontranslation, interpretation has its own features and characteristics.The second chapter is devoted to the specificities of interpreting, which requirethe interpreters to master the strategies of dealing with specificities of interpreting.Besides, interpreters must have some special qualities in order to apply thesestrategies.In the third chapter, the author compares qualities required of interpreters withthose required of translators, pointing out that interpreters should not only possesssome qualities of good translators, but also some unique qualities of their own.The fourth chapter is the core section of this thesis. Through comparing thetraining of the quality of interpreters with that of the translators, and combining theauthor’s personal working experiences as an interpreter as well as a translator, the author summarizes the training methods and ways for improving qualities ofinterpreters.
