Simultaneous interpreting (SI for short hereafter), with the confronted challenges as Chernov once put it,"a unique human activity practiced under extreme cognitive processing conditions and constrained by short-term memory capacity", boasts of its own unique cutting edges (such as time-saving, money-saving, timely convey etc.) and irresistible temptation which result in its much more popularity and widespread use than ever before. It’s self-evident that at present there is an ever-increasing demand of English-Chinese SI (E-C SI for short hereafter) and Chinese-English SI service. It’s in light of the fact that this paper chooses to cast light on E-C SI in an attempt that its conclusion could be of value to the teaching, training and practice in E-C SI.The logical think-map is as follows:analysis--conclusion1(a hypothetical and unproven one)--analysis--conclusion2(a hypothetical and unproven one)--observation and analysis of the real material--verification of the above two conclusions. The research approach employed in this paper is an observational and analytical one in compliance with empirical research. This paper, based on the definitions of SI, with the aid of effort model, gives a summarization of its features and explores about the motivation of the employment of syntactical linearity (SL for short hereafter) from the angle of Contrastive Linguistics and Sociolinguistics. The exploration leads to the1st discovery or conclusion: SL is a must of important strategies due to the possibility and condition created by the similarities of the two languages and the inward driving forces and demand propelled by the differences of them and the wide acceptance of some expressions ever considered eccentric or unacceptable among the audience as a result of the shift or change in the oral Chinese. And then based on the definition of SL which covers two key points, that is parsing-based and great cohesive and coherent strength of chunks, the paper identifies the born limitation and dependence of SL and comes to the2nd conclusion:In E-C SI, SL is an important strategy but not an exclusive one. Instead, it needs the collaboration of other strategies so as to achieve the fulfillment of the SI task. And then, the four strategies are dealt with in a one-by-one manner. Apart from their respective definition and classification, this paper elaborates on the motivation for the choice of a specific strategy and its functions or what has been settled down by it. Finally, by means of the careful observation and in-depth analysis of the real material, the simultaneous interpreting of the Obama’s remarks on the death of Osama Bin Laden live broadcast by CCTV instead of material obtained through lab simulation experiment so as to guarantee the reliability of material, the author finds the above two conclusions proven and verified.
