The musical theater, originated in Britain in19thCentury, is a kind of drama formcombined with music, dancing, performance and dialogue. From the beginning of20thCentury, this entertainment form became more and more prevailed and Westernaudiences love this easy and pleasure entertainment so much. Soon, some classicmusical theaters like "Cats""The Phantom of the Opera" and "West Side Story"swept the world and were translated into different languages on the international stage,which makes the translation of musical theater become a hot issue. With thehigh-speed development of China’s economy, people’s demand for spiritual life andpursuit of art become greater and greater, and some world-known musical theatershave been introduced from overseas to China. Some of them were translated intoChinese and performed in Chinese directly, while some were not to keep the originalflavor, which brought inconvenience to Chinese audiences. Therefore, it is crucial totranslate a script of foreign musical into Chinese.Script translation belongs to literary translation and its language features sharesimilarities with poetry. This research focuses on the bilingual script of classicalmusical Cats as a case study, analyzes strong and week points of the Chinese versionfrom the perspective of Chinese poetry culture, so as to find better ways to translatemusical script.This research has five chapters. Chapter One is introduction, including researchbackground, thesis organization and research significance. Chapter Two is regardingstudy of musical script, including introduction to the musical theater, musical scriptand script translation in China and abroad; Chapter Three is regarding the relationshipbetween culture and translation and theoretical direction of poetry translation, mainlyabout "translating verse as verse" proposed by Wang Zuoliang; Chapter Four is thestudy of bilingual script of the musical theater Cats, including translation methodsused in it, problems and improvement. Last part is the conclusion, discussingtranslation ways in terms of diction, style and culture.
