Wang Meng is a famous contemporary Chinese writer. He has a clear and in-depth understanding about the contemporary Chinese social life. His novels do not only present the contemporary social and political life in China, but also have a vivid description about the old cadres’life experiences and fates in the specific historical period in China. In contemporary China, especially from the beginning of the founding of China to the end of the Cultural Revolution, political factors’influences are very powerful. They do not only affect the future of the nation, but also influence the fate of individuals. Cadres, as the main actor in the arena of politics, are the executors of CPC’s policies, their personal life experiences, ups and downs are closely linked to the political life. In Wang Meng’s novels, there are lots of descriptions about the figure of cadres especially old cadres. Their thoughts and life experiences are not the same, but they kind of reflect Wang Meng’s own life experiences and the specific social history and social life. This paper attempts to analysis the characteristics of those old cadres’in Wang Meng’s novels.This paper is divided into three chapters:The first chapter makes an approximate classification about the characteristics of those old cadres’in Wang Meng’s novels. It mainly discusses three kinds of different characters. The first category people are those who experienced spiritual transformation. Some of them do not care about anything. They have lost their own judgment, do not have their own thought, and only repeat what others said. Some of them have even abandoned their original ideals. Those who still keeps a sober mind after experiencing a series of political movements or even political persecutions fall into the second category. They do their best to try to find a way out. The third category people are those who suffered tremendously under the political pressure. And their souls were distorted. They even suffered mental disorders.The second chapter mainly analyzes the similarities between the characters of the old cadres and Wang Meng’s own life experiences. Wang Meng’s life experiences are a key to the understanding of the old cadres’images. He put his own life experiences into the old cadres’images, and woven the stories happened around him into the old cadres’stories which are full of blood and tears. The old cadres’images can reflect the writer’s own life experiences. Their fates are alike.The third chapter discusses the significance of molding such characteristics. And when compared with other contemporary writers of the old cadre images, Wang Meng has a style of his own. By reading Wang Meng’s novels, readers can know more about that specific period of time and the life in that time.
