This thesis is a report on translating The Silver Box by John Galsworthy, which gives adetailed description of the whole process and analyzes the relevant translation methods.Firstly, the author introduces the background information of the source text, the client’sbriefs and specifications as well as the text’s characteristics. The following parts elaborateeach steps of the translation process ranging from translators designation, preparations fortranslation to target text revision.The major part of the thesis is case analysis. The cases are analyzed respectively inseveral categories such as idiom, address term, colloquial expression, animal image andreligion. According to the client’s requirements, purpose of translation and targeted readers,the target text serves mainly as reading material. Guided by Newmark’s translation theory—semantic translation and communicative translation, the majority of the drama dialogues aretranslated abiding by semantic translation method, however, communicative translation isused where comprehension difficulties and inaccurate understandings of the source text occurby solely employing semantic translation. The cases analyzed in the thesis are mainlytranslated with communicative translation method.The author summarized the whole translation process as conclusion on the basis of caseanalysis.
