The task for translation of Advice to Young Men is part of a translation project initiatedby The College of Foreign Languages of Henan University and Foreign Language Teachingand Research Press. The task is designed for7members in our team, and the author hastranslated about15,000English words. Advice to Young Men was written by William Cobbett,an English pamphleteer and journalist. His language is simple and plain but imbued withsharp and incisive thoughts. However, only few of his works were translated into Chineseexcept Rural Rides. The translation of Advice to Young Men is a door through which we canlearn more about William Cobbett, and more and more people will pay close attention to andstudy his works.This thesis is a translation report based on this practice and consists of task description,process description, case analysis, summary and conclusion. Task description is anintroduction to Advice to Young Men, the author William Cobbett and the translation plan.Process description is about the process before, of and after translation. Case analysis is anaccount of important and difficult points with particular examples and the translation strategy.Summary and conclusion is the translator’s thoughts and experiences gained from thepractice.As we all know, different ways of thinking between Chinese and English have a greateffect on translation. In addition, what impresses the author most is that translation is no easyjob. A qualified translator needs to have a good mastery of English and Chinese, a great dealof cultural knowledge as well as a solid basis of translation theory.
