A Consecutive Interpreting Report On Think Fast,Talk Smart

This thesis is a practice report based on consecutive interpreting of ‘Think fast,Talk smart-Communication techniques” presented by Matt Abrahams,a lecture held in Stanford University.This report is characterized with speaking terminology,professional abbreviations,and many local expressions,idioms,which lead to lots of challenges to the interpreter.The author recorded the whole interpreting,and converted it into text.This report is written after analysis.It includes four parts: introduction,pre-interpretation preparation and process description,case study and summary.For pre-interpretation preparation,the author makes a comparison between the simultaneous interpretation and the consecutive interpretation and make some arrangements to conduct this mock conference.Besides,the author views the official website of GSB to get more background information about the speaker and the theme of this lecture and she collects many terminology by viewing documents and other lectures held by him so as to better prepare the consecutive interpretation on site.Then the author analyzes all kinds of problems in interpreting process due to listening,limited vocabulary,and deficient knowledge of language,as well as the limited professional knowledge and weak cross-cultural awareness with respect to extra-linguistic knowledge under the guidance of Daniel Gile's interpretation comprehension: C = KL + ELK + A(Comprehension=Knowledge of Language +Extra-linguistic Knowledge + Analysis).Based on Gile's interpretation comprehension,the author did a lot research that apply the Equation into this practice.Under guidance of the interpretation comprehension,the author comes up with corresponding strategies after this interpretation practice.In the consecutive interpreting practice,due to the wide range of materials,a large number of special terms and difficult words and a large number of local expressions and idioms,the interpreter encountered many problems such as errors in hearing,difficult terms,and the speaker's logic confusion.Therefore,the interpreter can flexibly use the background knowledge,alternate use of information integrationand reorganization strategies,note-taking techniques and coping tactics to complete the interpretation practice.This report pointed out linguistic knowledge as vocabulary,extra-linguistic knowledge as professional knowledge and cultural factors are the main obstacles to interpretation for this lecture about communication techniques.In addition,the author provided some suggestions on better interpreting these programs under GICE(Gile's Interpretation Comprehension Equation).They are enlarging vocabulary and strengthening listening comprehension ability to expand knowledge of language;accumulating idioms and local expressions as much as possible,especially those appears in the daily communication,and professional knowledge about some industries;utilizing cognition,intention and image analysis to enhance analysis ability.
