This is a translation project report for construction contract between Hermèsand WeGo Engineering Co., Ltd, of which part8、9、10are the source text. Thematerial mainly includes insurances, liabilities and indemnities; time; measurement, payment and adjustment of the contract sum and so on. Translation of this contract fitsinto the category of pragmatic translation and its primary goal is to realize thecommunicative effects of the original text. Functional equivalence, raised by Dr.Eugene Nida, implies different degrees of adequacy ranging from minimal to maximaleffectiveness factors, is defined as “in terms of the degree to which the receptors ofthe message in the receptor language respond to it in substantially the same manner asthe receptors in the source language”(Nida1969:24). From this point of view, functional equivalence could be viewed as the right principle of contract translation. This report mainly consists of the following four parts: Part One is the translationproject description, including project background, objectives and significance. PartTwo is the background of the source text, including the introduction for the parties, main contents of the source text and linguistic features of the source text. Part Three isabout translation difficulties and methods. The methods include: translation of terms, word conversion, sentence conversion and translation of long sentences. Part Fourconcludes with the lessons and unsolved problems in the translation project.
