Zou Tao Jiao Chou Ji Research

Jiao Chou Ji is a classical collection of short stories written by the late Qing Dynastyliterati Zou Tao. Mr. Lu Xun has clearly affirmed its value, so he paralleled it with otheroutstanding works imitation of Liao Zhai Zhi Yi,such as Xie Duo,Ye Tan Sui Lu,Ying ChuangYi Cao and so on, when he comments the creation trendency of classical Chinese fiction,inBrief History of Chinese Fiction. This paper set Jiao Chou Ji as the research object, at thesame time, implement a comprehensive interpretations of it from several aspects such ascreative motivation, ideological content and artistic characteristics. on the basis of previousresearch, maybe we can breakthrough the current situation, which was scattered and synoptic,so as to make people aware of the ideological and artistic value of this literary work, andevaluate its position in the history of the classical Chinese novel pertinently.This articleconsists of four parts.The first part is the introduction. In this part, the author summarized the research statusof Jiao Chou Ji, and pointed out the significance to research this work deeply andsystematically.The second section describes the life experiences and writings of Zou Tao, analysis thecreative motivation of Jiao Chou Ji. The creative motivation of Jiao Chou Ji has two mainaspects,“expressing after discontentment” and “classic imitation”. First of all, the creation ofJiao Chou Ji is the inheritance and practice of Han Yu’s literary views. It is specificallyincluding two parts, which were expressing the misfortune for the author, and expressing themisfortune for the motherland and the countrymen. Painful experiences of the author and thesocial reality of late Qing Dynasty both included in the novel. Secondly, imitation of theclassics such as Liao Zhai Zhi Yi and Hong Lou Meng is also an important creation motivationof the Jiao Chou Ji.The third section analyzes the ideological content and cultural significance of Jiao ChouJi.This work critiqued the reality of the late Qing Dynasty, exposed the darkness andcorruption of the ruling class, satirized the undesirable general mood of society, anddeprecated the bad habits of intellectuals and the malpractice of imperial examination system.Simultaneously, praised of the sincerely love warmly, and commended the behaviors tomaintain the moral with lives. Good and evil compared with each other, and in such a way toachieve the purpose to persuade the society. The fourth part of the article focuses on analyzing the artistic characteristics of JiaoChou Ji. Features of the novel In the narrative is combined fantasy and reality, and reflectedthe reality by creating virtual scenes. The novel used of several ways to shape the characters,and good at using the method of comparison and contrast, demonstrated superior artistic skills.In terms of the language and style, the novel shows the unity of opposites in elegant poeticlanguage and intense style.In summary, Jiao Chou Ji has made a very good performance in ideological implicationand artistic attainments. It is a masterpiece that can not be ignored in the history of classicalChinese novel, and its value should be affirmed.
